What is a Chartered Director?

Chartered Director is the established international benchmark qualification for directors - the Gold Standard for the profession of directing businesses.

Chartered Directors must not only undergo training and pass a number of exams, they must also be able to prove a significant track record as a director to the IoD interview panel.

The Chartered Director programme is accredited by the Institute of Directors (IoD) which, like a university, holds a Royal Charter empowering it to award qualifications.

Chartered Director is the top IoD qualification - combining learning and actual professional experience.

Chartered Directors qualify through a programme of learning, development and assessment of experience in key areas of a board's work, including taking responsibility for:

  • the company's vision, purpose and values in the context of its strategy in an holistic way

  • delivering the strategy through appropriate control and performance monitoring and review

  • stakeholders - their concerns, their needs and communication strategies

  • ensuring the board works as a collective, has policies and procedures laid down, and engages in evaluation and development

Underlining these areas are directors' responsibilities in understanding their liabilities and their stewardship and leadership roles.

Being a Chartered Director demonstrates commitment to professionalism, integrity and lifelong learning.

Applicants must complete prescribed formal training leading to two levels of examination that must be passed:

  1. Certificate in Company Direction, then

  2. Diploma in Company Direction.

Having passed the examinations, candidates receive further training in:

  • HR

  • Marketing strategies, and

  • Leadership and strategic change

Following successful completion of the examinations and further training, candidates are assessed for suitability for election by a rigorous interview process and must provide verifiable evidence of a track record in board-level leadership in significant organisation(s).

Chartered Directors must continue learning, and are required to complete at least 30 hours continuing professional development (CPD) training every year.
