ISO 9001:2008 is universally recognised as the global quality management standard. It is the Rolls Royce of quality standards, rigorously developed over the years by the International Organization for Standardization.

Business clients of yours who are interested in whether you have a quality mark will probably see ISO as more credible than Lexcel, which lacks rigour when compared to ISO and is perceived as not truly independent because it is both promoted and administered by solicitors' own professional body, the Law Society of England and Wales.

Whilst for many solicitors in England and Wales Lexcel is the simpler and cheaper option, ISO 9001:2008 is more adaptable to the specific needs of individual practices, especially niche and international firms. For them Lexcel can seem inflexible, woolly and lacking in rigour when compared to systems built to ISO 9001:2008 standards. There is also the danger of having to do things simply to comply with Lexcel, without any benefit to the firm or its clients.

ISO 9001:2008 suits the delivery of legal services well. It is easier to tailor to the peculiar needs of niche firms or those using innovative processes. It is a more rigorous and better defined standard than Lexcel, although it can be harder for lawyers to understand at first. The great benefit is that ISO is internationally recognised by virtually everyone and therefore provides universal assurance of service quality.
